“Unlocking the Prison” Workshop, Part 2
Dr. Kimora
On Sunday, October 25, 2009, Coach Taylor and I did conduct a seminar entitled “Unlocking the Prison Within” at the New Seminary in New York City. As you recall from my last column, the New Seminary is a center for interfaith studies in New York. We were also joined by Todd Patton, M.D. and Jaik Schubert. Dr. Patton talked about the pitfalls of addiction. Dr. Patton is the Medical Director of the Osborne Association. Mr. Schubert talked about the role of correctional education in prisons. Mr. Schubert is the Associate Superintendent at Edgecombe Correctional Facility in New York.
Most of the seminar was directed toward the concept of “What If?”. As you GOGI girls recall, we need to look at 1) Incoming Information; 2) Breathe; 3) What if? and 4) Another What if?
During this “What if” process in the seminar, the seminary students were taught how to take incoming information in their lives and look at the perceptions they are forming as they process the information. Next, we asked them to breathe from their belly so they could relax and pay attention to their own decisions in a productive manner. Then we focused on how they could actualize what they were dreaming about in life in terms of job, career, where they would like to live, and who they would like to live with in the future.
Coach Taylor and I listened to each personal story. We then got the class to realize that they can start living their dream NOW by watching themselves, believing in their talents and abilities, and by figuring out how to make the future become their present. It was a fascinating process because you could see the light bulbs going off with these students.
The seminary students realized, as you already know, that you CAN accomplish what you wish in life. You have to believe in yourself and follow the GOGI steps.
I encourage you to review the “What if” chapter of the text Women in Prison: Women finding Freedom by Coach Taylor, with a foreward by Dr. Kimora.
Happy holidays!
